Brasília – The FIFA World Cup should create 47,900 job openings in the tourism industry across the 12 host states between April and June this year. The estimative was issued by the National Federation for Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC, in the Portuguese acronym), based on the expected influx of 3.6 million tourists to Brazil during the contest, from June 12th through July 13th.
The CNC economist Fabio Bentes notes that the number is up 60% from 29,500 new jobs during the same period last year. Most of these jobs, however, should be temporary. “Very few of these jobs are likely to become permanent, seeing as the tourism industry is not faring so well this year. It is only natural that after the Cup, these new admissions will be stripped off, because these are temporary jobs,” said Bentes.
According to the CNC, the food industry will account for the bulk of new jobs. Approximately 16,100 jobs, i.e. 33.5% of total openings will be at bars and restaurants, which are the leading segment within the tourism industry according to the federation. The passenger transportation segment should see 14,000 new jobs (29.2% of total), and hotels, lodges and the like should account for 12,300 new jobs (25.7%). Cultural and recreational services should create 3,800 new openings, and 1,700 new jobs should be available at travel agencies.
