São Paulo – The Tangier Med Port, Morocco, registered a growth of 8.7% in the volume of cargo handled in its terminals in 2016 over 2015, reaching 44,615,849 tons. The information was made public by the Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA), the operator of the maritime complex.
The majority of the volume handled in the Moroccan port was via containers: 31,487,951 tons, up 5% over 2015. In the year, the Tangier Med Port handled 2,963,654 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit).
The increase in the traffic of passengers in comparison to the previous year was of 15%, with the transportation of 2,763,563 people. In turn, oil transportation climbed even more over 2015 at 39%. Overall, 5,978,214 tons of the commodity was handled by the Arab country’s port.
The exclusive terminal of French car manufacturer Renault handled 312,962 vehicles, an increase of 21% over the previous year. From this total, 252,982 units were exported. The regular vehicle terminal handled 72,807 cars, an increase of 32% in the same comparison.
According to TMSA, the companies operating within the port’s industrial platform generated over MAD 64 billion (over USD 6 billion), with the car industry being responsible for MAD 50 billion (USD 4.9 billion) of this total.
