São Paulo – Fans of Arab music may see show “Cantos e Encantos Árabes – Música e Dança para Sentir” (Arab Corners and Enchantments – Music and Dance to Feel), by Sami Bordokan and Cristina Antoniadis, on Friday (20) at Bella theatre, in Bixiga neighbourhood, in the city of São Paulo. The presentation, to start at 11:00 pm, is part of Bella Música, and should count on the presence of William Bordokan (derback), Cláudio Kairouz (kanoum), Maurício Mouzayek (daff) and with the special participation of ballerina Cristina Antoniadis.
Considered one of the most important lute players in Brazil, Sami Bordokan presents a classic Eastern repertoire and folk items in his shows, both his own compositions and improvisations.
The musician was born in São Paulo, in 1973. A son of Lebanese, his first contact with music was at home, listening to his father, a lute player and amateur singer who, in turn, had learnt from the secrets of Byzantine chant from his grandfather, a priest at the Grecco-Malakite Church.
At the age of six, Sami started playing the lute. In his adolescence he travelled to Lebanon to study the instrument and Oriental singing. There, he also researched the roots of classic Arab music. Later, he travelled to Syria, Egypt and North Africa, where he boosted his studies in Oriental scales, rhythms and also in several styles of Arab music. After the period, he returned to Brazil to promote the art.
