São Paulo – Up until October 4th, students from Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia may apply for a Brazilian postgraduate scholarship programme. Enrolment is open to foreigners from countries with which Brazil maintains educational, cultural or scientific cooperation agreements.
The scholarships are part of a program of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Foundation for Improvement of Higher Education Students (Capes). The organizations are part of the Student Program – Postgraduate Agreement for master’s and doctoral courses.
Results will be announced in December and classes should start in March 2011. According to information supplied by the Capes, in order to take part in the program, candidates may not have a permanent Brazilian visa or Brazilian nationality, must have completed a graduate course in a specific field of knowledge, and a Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras), among other requirements.
To enrol, candidates must fill in the Capes online form and submit the record and the documents required to the Brazilian embassies in each country. According to the Capes, the aim of the program is to increase the level of training of university professors, researchers, professionals and higher education graduates in 54 countries that maintain agreements with Brazil.
For the master’s program, the scholarship lasts up to 24 months, and for the doctoral program, up to 48 months. The trip to Brazil will be paid by the student, and the return trip to the country of origin will be supplied by the program, should the student complete the course.
