São Paulo – The end of Ramadan will be celebrated at the oldest Islamic temple in Latin America, Brazil Mosque, located in the Cambuci district, city of São Paulo. Eid al-Fitr, in Brazil called the Breakfast Party, starts at 7 am on Sunday (25) with a prayer, followed by a grand reception at the mosque.
The month of fasting of the followers of Islam – near 20% of the world population – comes to an end, officially, on Saturday (24). Since May 26, believers fasted from sunrise to sunset – children, pregnant women, the diseased, the elderly, among others, don’t fast.
The Eid al-Fitr gathers the whole of the Muslim community to celebrate the end of the fasting period. In the Arab country travelling is common during Ramadan – the Dubai International Airport, for instance, is expecting to receive over 100,000 people during the weekend in Terminal 3 alone, which is an exclusive terminal for Emirates airlines.
Charity works
During Ramadan, the Islamic Charity Association (SBM), which funds Brazil Mosque, promoted many donations to those vulnerable to the cold and hunger. Blankets, sweatshirts and baskets with basic goods were distributed to the population in need and a dinner was served to the followers for free every night, at the end of fasting.
“Despite holding many activities during the year, in the Ramadan we make an effort to surpass our limits and reach out a helping hand to the brothers in need,” said SBM’s president, Nasser Fares, in a statement.
Over three thousand refugees are registered at SBM. They receive emotional support and professional outplacement to those arriving in the country in search of new opportunities and a better life.
