Brasília – Lack of rainfall led to reduced soy and maize yields in Brazil, as per the 8th 2015/2016 Grain Crop Survey released this Tuesday (10th) by the National Supply Company (Conab). As a result, the national production estimate has been revised to 202.4 million tons – down 2.5% or 5.3 million tons from 207.7 million tons in the 2014/2015 crop.
Conab said the revision was driven by second-crop maize, which was hit hard by drought in April. Output is seen at 52.9 million tons – down 3.1% from 54.6 million tons in 2014/2015. Planted area for soy, which makes up 47.9% of national grains output, has increased by 3.1%, therefore output will be higher than in the last crop in spite of weather issues. The soy crop is expected to increase by 677,100 tons, from 96.2 million tons in 2014/2015 to 96.9 million tons.
