Brasília – Spending by Brazilians in foreign trips reached US$ 1.703 billion in September, according to figures released by the Central Bank this Tuesday (23rd). Last year, US$ 1.791 billion were spent in September. Year-to-date as of late September, spending reached US$ 16.339 billion, as against US$ 16.181 billion in the same period of 2011.
The head of the Central Bank’s Economic Department, Tulio Maciel, says Brazilian overseas spending has remained virtually level with last year, at a time in which the dollar is appreciated against the Brazilian real. “The account is highly sensitive to the exchange rate, and it has a strong influence in interrupting the growth in spending during travels,” he explains.
Foreigners spent US$ 441 million in Brazil in September. From January to September, revenues reached US$ 5 billion, as against US$ 4.836 billion in the first nine months of 2011.
The travel account deficit stood at US$ 1.262 billion last month and US$ 11.338 billion from January to September this year.
