São Paulo – Rio de Janeiro will host the second Brazilian edition of the UAE-founded Zayed Charity Run on August 23. The race raises funds for charitable causes while awarding prizes to participants. In the Rio edition, all registration fees will be donated, and BRL 500,000 (USD 97,000) in prize money will be distributed to competitors.
According to state news agency WAM, the race will bring together professional and amateur athletes, as well as 50 runners from the United Arab Emirates. The men’s, women’s and para-athlete 5K and 10K races will start at Flamengo Beach from 3 p.m. More information about the event and registration is available here.
All proceeds from registration fees will be donated to the AfroReggae Cultural Group through a partnership with the Criança Esperança initiative, with support from the Embassy of the UAE in Brasília. The funds will be used to expand education, culture and social inclusion programs for vulnerable children and young people.
The BRL 500,000 prize pool will include awards for race winners, cash drawings and airline tickets to Dubai, UAE. Founded in Abu Dhabi in 2001, the Zayed Charity Run has also been held in Cairo, Miami, New York, Beijing, Addis Ababa and Budapest. The first Brazilian edition took place last year in Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana neighborhood.
In a statement, Mohamed Helal Al Kaabi, chairman of the race’s Supreme Organizing Committee, said he was proud to return to Brazil as part of the event’s international expansion, “strengthening ties between nations through sport and a shared purpose.”
