São Paulo – The monsoon season in Oman’s Dhofar region attracted nearly half a million tourists from June 21 to July 31, a 6.9% increase in visitor numbers, state news agency ONA said on Thursday (13).
Omanis call this period the Dhofar Khareef, when the Dhofar region experiences light rains and mist, creating a humid and lush environment. The phenomenon occurs between June and September, creating a striking contrast with the desert landscape that predominates across Oman. Dhofar Governorate is in the country’s south and is home to the city of Salalah.
According to the ONA report, based on preliminary statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the Dhofar region received 472,449 visitors during the period cited above, compared with 442,100 on the same dates last year. The data shows that the monsoon season attracts visitors from Oman and abroad.
During the period analyzed, Omanis accounted for 76.3% of all tourists. Visitors from the other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman—represented 16.6% of visitors. The number of visitors from Oman and the GCC increased, while the total from other nationalities declined.
