São Paulo – Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services announced on Friday afternoon (3) in Brasília that the National Fertilizers and Plant Nutrition Council (Confert) had approved the inclusion of six proposals in the Strategic Projects Portfolio of the National Fertilizer Plan. One of the approved initiatives was submitted by Morocco’s OCP, one of the world’s largest producers of crop fertilizers.
The portfolio now includes six projects from companies such as Mosaic, Fospar, and OCP. Five phosphate fertilizer projects are planned for industrial complexes in Barcarena, Pará state; Cajati and Tapira, São Paulo; Uberaba, Minas Gerais; and Paranaguá, Paraná. A Petrobras phosphate fertilizer production hub in Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, was also added to the construction portfolio.
Industry representatives have urged the government to increase fertilizer availability in Brazil, one of the world’s largest grain producers and the leading exporter of soybeans. The country relies heavily on imported fertilizers to sustain its agricultural production. The government recently announced the resumption of domestic nitrogen fertilizer production in Bahia, Sergipe, and Paraná as part of its strategy to reduce external dependence.
