Brasília – This Tuesday (10th), the National Supply Company (Conab) has released the results of its third survey of the 2013-2014 Brazilian grain crop, with a growth forecast revised up by 4.8% from the prior estimate. The country should harvest 195.9 million tonnes of grain, with a 3.6% increase in planted area, from 53.2 million to 55.2 million hectares.
According to the Conab, soy was the highlight of this crop, with a 10.5% increase in output to an estimated 90 million tonnes. The planted area for soy has also increased, by 6.2%, from 27.7 million to 29.4 million hectares.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has also released its estimate for the 2014 national cereal, grain legume and oil plant crop. Output should be 186.9 million tonnes, the same as forecasted for 2013. The IBGE’s first prognosis, made in October, expected a 1.4% decline in 2014. As per the November prognosis, in the next summer crop, output will increase for six out of ten main products: 1st crop beans (31.7%), cotton (12.4%), cassava (9.9%), soy (9.0%), rice (5.8%) and tobacco (2.0%).
