São Paulo – Syria produced 14.8 million barrels of oil in the first half of the year, the Ministry of Energy said Thursday (20), according to state news agency SANA. Output is 79% below pre-2011 conflict levels, but agreements and projects are underway to restore infrastructure and boost production.
According to the Ministry of Energy, Syria also produced 1.429 billion cubic meters of raw natural gas, 35,500 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas and 3.5 million metric tons of petroleum products in the first six months of the year. During the period, 152 wells resumed operations and 10 new wells were brought online.
According to the government, Syria is investing in reviving its domestic oil and petroleum products industry by signing memorandums of understanding and contracts with foreign companies this year to increase oil production. Projects include rehabilitating a pipeline, restarting a pumping station in Homs that has been shut down for 12 years, and bringing an offshore platform back into operation.
