For three years the Arab Syrian Cultural Centre, in São Paulo, has offered courses of the oriental language for free. In the beginning there were 40 pupils, one room and one teacher. Currently there are 450 pupils, four classrooms and three teachers. The majority of the pupils are not Arab descendants.

Selection of classic tales is a good option for those who want to know a little more about Arab literature. The volume, released in the second semester of 2005 by publishing house Ediouro, brings many stories from known authors of the Arab world, like Gibran Khalil Gibran. The selection and the translation to Portuguese were made by the writer Jamil Almansur Haddad and by the poet José Paulo Paes.
