The official Brazilian Portuguese version of the Koran, the holy book of Islam, is going to be presented to the public today. The translation was written by University of São Paulo (USP) professor and Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce vice-president of International Relations Helmi Mohammed Ibraim Nasr. The translation was printed at the King Fahd Complex in Saudi Arabia, from where all Koran versions considered legitimate by the World Islamic League are printed.

Professor Helmi Mohammed Ibraim Nasr is known as the man of languages and culture. He came from Egypt to Brazil in 1962 to start the department of Arab Language at the University of São Paulo and is in the country to this day. He stayed to fulfil what he calls a mission: to keep alive the Arab culture amongst the immigrants, their sons and grandsons. Nasr was responsible for the translation of the Koran from Arabic to Portuguese.

Leaders in the Islamic and Arab communities heard by ANBA believe that the official version of the Koran in the Portuguese language will serve as a reference both for Muslims as for people of other beliefs. A better comprehension of the Islamic religion on behalf of the Brazilians should be one of the results of the initiative.

The inauguration ceremony for the 3rd Arab Culture Show, in the Brazilian southeastern city of Campinas, which took place last night, counted on the participation of the mayor Hélio de Oliveira Santos, of the Palestinian ambassador, Musa Odeh, of the Syrian general consul, Ghazi Deeb, the president of the city council, Carlos Saad, and the secretary general of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Michel Alaby. The event goes on until Sunday.
