São Paulo – In addition to attending the Healthcare medical products fair, held from April 14th to 16th in Damascus, representatives of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce had meetings with Syrian businessmen and chambers of commerce last week. The Arab country needs investment in infrastructure and imported products, both of which Brazil is able to supply.
According to the government relations executive at the Arab Brazilian Chamber, Tamer Mansour, Syria needs to expand its infrastructure and its civil construction industry. Businessmen from the Arab country also want to buy more food products.
In May, Syria will host another trade show, Buildex, which features new products and technologies for the civil construction industry. "The country will also host cosmetics and food fairs," says Mansour.
During his visit to Syria, Mansour attended several meetings scheduled by the Brazilian Embassy to Damascus. In one of them, with Healthcare Ministry personnel, he learned that a large tender will be floated. Brazilian companies will be eligible to bid, as long as they have a representation in the Arab country.
According to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, 2010 was the year in which Brazil exported the greatest amount of products to Syria. The equivalent of US$ 547.4 million was sold to the Arab country. Brazil imported US$ 47.4 million from Syria.
Compared with 2009, when Brazil exported US$ 303.1 million, exports increased by 44.7%. Brazil exports mainly sugar, coffee and meats to Syria, and buys mainly oil derivatives and seeds.
