São Paulo – DP World, the port operator headquartered in Dubai, announced on Tuesday (29) that cargo throughput reached 56.1 million containers at its ports in 2012, growth of 2.4% over 2011. In a press statement, the company explained that the growth in gross volume of containers transport is due to the good performance in operations in the Americas, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. In the United Arab Emirates, DP World transported 13.3 million containers in 2012.
The executive director at the group, Mohammed Sharaf, stated that DP World started 2012 at a strong rhythm of growth, but that it faced “challenges” in the second half. However, he believes that the “firm focus” on management of funds and in the search for revenues caused the company to reach the results forecasted for 2012, yet to be presented.
Sharaf forecasts that 2013 will be “exciting” as projects like the Embraport terminal, in Santos, and others in Dubai and London, should be completed.
