São Paulo – Egg exports from Brazil were down 62.5% in the first quarter of the year, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) has reported. Shipped volume went from 5,500 tons in Q1 2016 to 2,070 tons in Q1 this year.
“Consumption increased on the domestic market, which proved more attractive to the industry sales-wise. As a result, much of the supply that would otherwise be exported was sold domestically,” a press release quoted ABPA vice president for poultry, Ricardo Santin, as saying.
Export revenue dropped by 59.3%, to USD 2.8 million, from USD 6.9 million in Q1 2016 according to ABPA numbers.
The United Arab Emirates was the leading importer of Brazilian eggs at 1,500 tons, which was less than in Q1 2016. Japan was the second biggest buyer at 272 tons, down 68%.
In March alone, 427 tons of eggs were exported from Brazil, down 70.5%, with revenue reaching USD 627,000, down 69.3%.
