São Paulo – Two Egyptian universities have opened registrations for those interested in Portuguese and Portuguese-language literature teaching spots. There are three openings: two for Aswan University, in the city of same name, and one for Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. Those selected will receive an allowance for the time teaching in the Arab country. (In the picture above, the Abu Simbel temples, in the Aswan region).
According to information from the Aswan University, applications will be accepted until November 9, with classes beginning in January of next year. Candidates must have a degree in Languages, Literature, Portuguese or a related field.
The public announcement states that professors with experience teaching Portuguese and Portuguese-language literature will be given preference. It also states that the candidates must be able to communicate in English and have availability to learn Arabic.
Those selected will have to prepare and teach classes, devise and grade exams, do research into Portuguese and Portuguese-language literature field and write a report on their research and teaching activities at the end of the period, among other activities.
The professors at Aswan will work as volunteers and will receive a monthly allowance of EGP 3,600 (around USD 48.59). In Al-Azhar University, they will also work as volunteers and receive EGP 2,600 (around USD 145) as monthly allowance. The cost of living in Egypt is lower than in Brazil. The teaching period in Aswan is six months and, in Al-Azhar University, it will be one year, with the possibility of extension for another year. Other benefits include transportation.
To apply, candidates must send a letter of intent and resume to aswanportugues@gmail.com. Those selected in this first round will then be interviewed by Skype. Results will come out on November 20.
