São Paulo – The president of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, said in a cabinet meeting held on Thursday (13) that the country needs to implement economic reforms pointed out by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to restore confidence in the country. A former army chief, Aoun has been governing Lebanon since January, when he was elected by parliament.
In this Thursday’s meeting with his cabinet, he said he met with the IMF delegation, which stressed “the importance of finalizing a program before summer, citing previous unsuccessful attempts,” the state news agency NNA reported.
According to him, the IMF called for the establishment of a unified data center for the Finance Ministry, as well as the passage of amendments to the Banking Secrecy Law and a law on banking sector restructuring. Aoun said the delegation also called for the government to appoint a president for the Central Bank of Lebanon, the Banque du Liban.
In the meeting, the Lebanese president highlighted the approval of the 2025 state budget in the previous meeting, urging the finance minister to monitor expenditures and to submit quarterly reports on spending.
