São Paulo – A photo exhibit will showcase the social work of the Brazilian Navy in Lebanon to celebrate September 7th, Independence Day in Brazil. The exhibit, with pictures by journalist Lú Braga and photographer Bruno Percut, both Brazilian, is set to open on September 10th and will run for a week at the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center, in Beirut.
The Brazilian Navy is part of a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. Entitled “Assim Vivemos” (This is how we live), the exhibition will showcase the work done by the staff of the Frigate Union (Fragata União), a Brazilian vessel deployed to the Arab country.
There are snapshots of the officers out on the ocean and working with the Lebanese community. On one of these initiatives, dubbed Recycled ArtWork, recycled waste from the ship is taken to the nursing home of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Sacrament, where they are reworked into works of art.
The pieces are created by the elderly who live at the nursing home as an occupational therapy activity. The work was created and is coordinated by the Brazilian Kátia Aawar. The Brazilian frigate’s crew comprises some 250 men, who produce roughly 30 cubic meters of waste per week. Lebanon is struggling with waste collection at this time.
“We are pleased that the Navy’s work is met with recognition. Our work routine isn’t easy. We are very committed to Brazil and this exhibition will show society how the Brazilian Navy is working for peace out here in the Middle East,” said admiral Flávio Brasil, who is in charge of the mission, according to material released by journalist Lú Braga.
“The Navy performs very serious, relevant work here in Lebanon. This is an excellent initiative, and it allows us to share the social responsibility work of our officers with the public,” said the Brazilian ambassador, Jorge Kadri, also according to the press release material. Lú Braga says there are plans to show the photos in Brazil in the future. Bruno Percut, who co-authored the exhibit with Braga, is a sergeant with the Brazilian Navy.
The exhibit features 20 pictures and admission is free. Opening dates are from Monday to Friday, from 10am to 8pm. The launch is scheduled for 7pm on September 10th.
