São Paulo – Fertilizer imports increased 11.2% in Brazil from January to November in comparison to last year’s same period, according to data released by the National Association for Fertilizer Dissemination (Anda). In November only, fertilizer purchases from abroad increased 4.5% over the same period of last year.
The cumulative imports volume of the first eleven months reached 22.4 million tons over 20.1 million tons in the same period of last year. In November, purchases add up to 1.8 million tons, in comparison to 1.7 million tons of last year’s same month, according to Anda’s data.
The Arab world is one of Brazil’s fertilizer suppliers. According to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, compiled by the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, the Brazilian market purchased 4.7 million tons of fertilizers from the Arab countries from January to November, being 541 tons this last month. The increase was of 19.5% in the cumulative year and 31% in November. In both periods, the percentage points exceeded the general increase of imports.
In contrast, the domestic fertilizer production fell by 6.2% in November to 696.9 thousand tons. In the cumulative year, there was also a drop, of 6.4%, to 8 million tons, according to Anda. Last year, the production recorded at 9.3 million tons. Despite being importers, Brazil also export a small volume of fertilizers.
