São Paulo – Brazilians have never spent as much money abroad as they did last month, according to results released this Friday (22nd) by the Brazilian Central Bank. According to the monetary authority, Brazilian tourists spent US$ 2.31 billion in October, the highest sum since records started being kept in 1969.
According to Central Bank figures, spending in October has exceeded even the holiday months of January and July, during which spending had already been high this year. In January, which held the former record, Brazilians spent US$ 2.29 billion. In July, spending stood at US$ 2.21 billion.
On the other hand, foreign tourists spent US$ 533 million in Brazil in October. As a result, there was a US$ 1.78 billion deficit between spending by foreigners in Brazil and spending by Brazilians abroad.
Year-to-date, Brazilians spent US$ 21.251 billion overseas, while foreigners spent US$ 5.575 billion in Brazil. The year-to-date deficit is US$ 15.676 billion, and the Central Bank estimates that the deficit should be US$ 17.2 million by the end of the year.
