São Paulo – The central government registered, in August and year-to-date ending in August, the highest deficit since the start of the historical series in 1997. According to data released this Thursday (29) by the National Treasure, the primary deficit reached BRL 20.345 billion (USD 6.24 billion) in August and BRL 71.418 billion (USD 21.91 billion) from January up until last month. The central government includes the National Treasure, Social Security and the Brazilian Central Bank.
The National Treasure registered a deficit of BRL 4.879 billion (USD 1.49 billion), the Brazilian Central Bank had a BRL 151.8 million (USD 46.57 million) deficit and Social Security had losses of BRL 15.3 billion (USD 4.69 billion). Government revenues continued to drop due to the economy downturn, however, spending didn’t decline in the same ratio. The target for this year is a primary deficit of BRL 170.5 billion (USD 52.31 billion).
