São Paulo – Inger Andersen, The vice president of the World Bank (Ibrd) for the Middle East and North Africa, has announced this Friday (28th) a program under which US$ 1.2 billion will be supplied for backing the democratic transition in Tunisia in 2014. The announcement was made at the end of a three-day visit to the Arab country, during which Andersen met with prime-minister Mehdi Jomaa, government officials and civil society representatives. The information was released in a communiqué from the Ibrd.
The plan provides for up to US$ 750 million for backing government reforms for creating a level economic playing field, fostering growth and jobs creation, and increasing accountability in services to the population.
Another US$ 300 million will be allocated to training local governments for decentralization of power under the new constitution. An additional US$ 100 million will be supplied in credit to small and medium businesses, and US$ 50 million will go to promoting exports.
