Rio de Janeiro – Employment in Brazilian industry dropped 1.4% in 2012, with negative results in 12 of the 14 areas researched, according to the Industrial Monthly Employment and Wage Research (Pimes), disclosed on Friday (10) by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The Northeast, with a reduction of 2.7%, presented the greatest drop among the regions. Then came São Paulo (-2.6%), Bahia (-2.6%) and Ceará (-2.5%). Paraná (2.2%) and Minas Gerais (0.8%) had growth in industrial employment.
The largest contraction was in the garment industry, with 8.9%. The wood (-8%), shoe and leather (-6.2%) and textile (-5.9%) sectors also presented bad results. There was growth in employment in the areas of food and beverages (3.9%), mining industry (3.8%) and machinery and equipment (1.1%).
