Rio de Janeiro – For the first time life expectancy in Brazil has risen above 70 years, reports the government statistical bureau (IBGE) (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) in its latest survey. According to the report, a Brazilian boy born today will probably live to the age of 71. Life expectancy for women is higher, at 77.6 years (the report points out that men are more at risk of violent death between the ages of 15 and 35). According to the IBGE, since 1980, life expectancy has risen 8.5 years.
The IBGE says that Brazilian life expectancy is above the world average, with the country in 88th place in the UN list of 192 countries. In first place is Japan, where life expectancy is 81.6 years. In last place is Zambia with 32.4 years (which is where Brazil was at the beginning of the 20th century).
