São Paulo – Exhibit “Images of the Middle East,” featuring 31 films shot in the region, will start at 6:00 pm this Wednesday (4th) in Brasília. The movies address the political and social scenario and the reasons for the popular uprisings in countries such as Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen.
The event is a part of the 1st Brasília International Arts Festival, which also includes music, fine arts, dancing, theatre and circus. The exhibit will take place at Cine Brasília and will open with a lecture from Reginaldo Nasser, an International Relations professor at the São Paulo Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-SP). He will give a presentation on the topics dealt with in the movies.
The exhibit will include short, medium-length and feature films. The curators are Arlene Clemesha, a professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), and Marcia Camargos, a writer and journalist. Most films are recent, made between 2009 and 2011. There are productions from Egypt, Qatar, Yemen, Palestine, the United Arab Emirates and Syria; and from non-Arab countries such as Iran, Canada, Norway, the United States, Belgium and the United Kingdom. |
The more recent works include the Egyptian “18 Days,” by ten different directors. The film depicts the downfall of former president Hosni Mubarak, showing ten stories about the uprising that were either heard or created by the directors and actors themselves.
“The Artisan,” a Yemeni film made in 2011, is about a bomb maker who has an experience that leads him to question his line of work. In “Cairo Exit,” shot in Egypt in 2010, director Hesham Issawi gives an account of contemporary life in the capital of the country, through the story of two lovers and the social taboos that permeate Egyptian society. Admittance is free and the exhibit will continue until January 8th.
