São Paulo – The Omani ambassador to Brasília, Khalid Salim Al Jaradi, convened with the Brazilian minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply Antônio Andrade last Thursday evening (10th) in Brasília. At the meeting, arranged upon the Arab diplomat’s request, they discussed technical partnerships between Brazil and Oman in agribusiness.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the ambassador gave the minister a list of requests for technical support to be implemented in Oman. The areas of interest include treating plantation residue.
Also according to the Ministry, Jaradi said Brazilian agriculture ranks among the most advanced in the world. The ambassador proposed cooperation actions with Brazil but did not disclose any details.
In March this year, the Brazilian vice president, Michel Temer, paid a visit to Oman, where he signed three agreements: one creates bilateral political consultation mechanisms, another establishes the Brazil-Oman Joint Commission, and the last one concerns cooperation in sports. According to the ministry of Agriculture, the meeting held on Thursday bears no relation with Temer’s visit to Oman.
Trade
Brazilian exports to Oman have increased. Year-to-date through September, the country shipped the equivalent of US$ 849.8 million to the Gulf country, up 0.7% from the same period in 2012, in 2012; year-to-date through September 2012, Omani exports to Brazil were up 48.2% from the same period in 2011. The figures were supplied by the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade.
Brazilian imports from Oman amounted to US$ 3.1 million year-to-date through September 2012, and rose to US$ 12 million in the same period this year. Year-to-date through September 2011, Brazil imported US$ 24.5 million worth of products from Oman.
The main product shipped from Brazil to Oman is iron ore, due to the fact that mining company Vale owns a pellet manufacturing plant and a maritime terminal in the Arab country. The main products imported from Oman by Brazil are fish, crustaceans and molluscs.
