São Paulo – The 20th edition of the World Petroleum Congress (WPC) started this Monday (5th) in Doha, Qatar, with an eye toward the future. In addition to innovations in the oil and gas field, participants will discuss clean energy sources and attend oil industry-related meetings. Up until the last day, Thursday (8th), panels will be held on the costs and benefits of non-fossil fuels, geopolitics, and climate change regulation.
The president of the Brazilian state-owned company Petrobras, José Sergio Gabrielli, will take part in panel “Youth in the Energy Future – A View at Different Scenarios for the Future of Energy and its Impact on the Next Generation.” He will be the keynote speaker for the plenary session “The Relationship between Good Governance, Social Responsibility and Sustainability,” on Thursday.
Participants will also engage in technical panels on the upstream and downstream oil industries and give accounts of experiences in difficult-to-reach locales, for which no adequate technology existed.
Solutions will be presented for offshore production under high pressure and high temperature conditions, new drilling techniques, the shifting role of state-owned oil companies, and even requirements for obtaining financing.
This year’s edition of the event is of greater importance to Brazil due to the country’s boominh oil and gas production. According to a statement issued by Petrobras, the congress selected the former Petrobras America president, Renato Bertani, as president of the WPC Executive Committee. The general manager of Petrobras Mexico, Milton Costa Filho, was chosen as the Brazilian representative at the WPC Programme Committee for the next three years. They will work to develop the next edition of the congress, scheduled for 2014 in Russia.
