São Paulo – Throughput at Morocco’s Port of Tangier (Tanger Med) was up 17% in 2014 from 2013. Goods handled at the port amounted to 41.671 million tonnes in 2014. The information was supplied by Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency, the port’s manager.
Container traffic increased significantly and exceeded 3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit), up 20% from 2013. Over 32 million tonnes were shipped, up 22%. This means the port’s operational capacity was exceeded, the agency says.
At French automaker Renault’s exclusive auto terminal, 211,000 vehicles were handled, up 43% from 2013, 170,100 of which originated from the Renault Melloussa plant, near Tangier, and were exported at the facility. The regular vehicle transhipment terminal handled 38,000 automobiles in 2014, up 24% from 2013.
In 2014, the Port of Tangier handled 425,000 tonnes worth of various goods, up 38% from 2013, highlighting cereals and coiled plates. Passenger traffic reached 2.15 million people last year, up 7% from 2013.
Last year, connectivity at Tanger Med also increased, as the facility became connected to 18 new facilities worldwide, including Brazil’s Port of Guaíra and ports in Djibouti, Gabon, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, France, Holland, Spain, England and Panama.
