São Paulo – Qatar will deposit US$ 1 billion in the Sudanese Central Bank as part of an aid package, said the Sudanese minister for Finances, Badr El-Din Mahmoud, by the end of the Qatari emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani’s visit to the African country this week. The information was released by the news agency Reuters.
According to the minister, the deposit is the second part of an aid package, but, according to Reuters, he did not supply any details on the first part of the deal. Mahmoud added that Qatar also plans to invest in big agriculture projects and in the energy segment in Sudan.
Qatar’s transfer will strengthen the foreign exchange reserves in Sudan and the Sudanese government hopes this will help curb the local pound depreciation. Since the separation from South Sudan, in 2011, the country is having difficulties obtaining revenue in dollar, as these funds used to come from the oil exports, and the South kept most oilfields.
