São Paulo – Labor and laws involving refugees and migrants will be under discussion in a seminar on Wednesday (30) in Brasília. The event is held by the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), the Federal Justice Council (CJF) and the National School for Training and Improvement of Judges (Enfam), among other organizations.
The STJ released material stating that the seminar is a result of the issue having risen to prominence both internationally and domestically, and tends to increase significantly in years to come. The organizers claim to expect the State to integrally welcome refugees, ensuring their full integration into society.
Numbers from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) show that 2015, conflicts led to 65 million displaced persons and 21 million refugees worldwide. The STJ notes that 9,000 refugees are living in Brazil, and asylum requests rose by 2,868% from 2010 to 2015, according to the National Committee for Refugees (Conare).
The seminar “Refugees and migrants: shared responsibilities” will focus on the international humanitarian crisis and the challenges involved in refugee policies in Brazil. Keynote speakers will include STJ minister Paulo Tarso Sanseveriano, UNHCR Brazil representative Isabela Marquez, former national secretary of Justice Beto Vasconcelos, and the minister director of the Department for International Organizations of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Maria Luisa Escorel de Moraes.
There will be a panel on refugees and labor, covering international protection, challenges and opportunities, and another one on migration to Brazil, including the new legal framework and challenges. A third panel will cover the challenges in enforcing the rights and integration of migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons in Brazil. A fourth panel will cover asylum, international and national law, Brazil’s role and the challenges to come.
Speakers will include STJ minister Villas Bôas Cuevas, the Coordinator for Brazil and South-South Migration Projects at the International Labor Organization (ILO), Cyntia Sampaio, the chairman of Caritas Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, Cândido Feliciano da Ponte Neto, the municipal secretary for Human Rights and Citizenship of São Paulo, Felipe de Paula.
