São Paulo – Research work on Ancient Egypt will be presented from March 28 to 30 next year at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) in Rio de Janeiro. Organized by the Kemet Study Group (GEKemet), the meeting will pay tribute to deceased historian Ciro Flamarion Cardoso, a landmark Egyptologist.
The 5th National Meeting on Egyptology Studies: Ciro Flamarion Cardoso will feature roundtable panels predominantly featuring scholars who Flamarion supervised in the past. They will discuss research work done under Flamarion’s guidance, current research subjects, or some aspect of the professor’s work.
According to GEKemet tutor Beatriz Moreira da Costa, 15 panelists have confirmed the participation so far, with registrations still due from researchers on Ancient Egypt who never worked under Flamarion, ranging from graduate students to PhDs.
Flamarion graduated in History from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and got his PhD in History from Université de Paris X. He was a go-to source on Ancient Egypt and had researches on the era’s politics and economics, and over the past few years imparted special attention to pharaoh Akhenaton and the city of Amarna. He would mostly pore over the religious reform that the pharaoh carried out.
The study group decided to hold the meeting as a way of carrying the torch after Flamarion’s death three years ago. GEKemet was created some three years ago, and it comprises History, Language and Philosophy scholars from Rio de Janeiro. The group is coordinated by PhD holder and Egyptologist Manuel Rolph de Viveiros Cabeceiras, with additional guidance provided by Moacir Elias Santos and Liliane Cristina Coelho, who are also PhD holders and Egyptologists.
The meeting is open to the general public. A BRL 15 registration fee is required in order to get a course certificate. According to the event’s website, activities will run from 10 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 6:30 pm.
A full program with all of the panelists’ names is yet to be released. The speakers confirmed thus far are André Chevitarese, Daniele Liberato, Evelyne Azevedo, Fabio Frizzo, Gisela Chapot, Julio Gralha, Keidy Matias, Liliane Cristina Coelho, Luis Eduardo Lobianco, Marcos Caldas, Moacir Elias Santos, Nely Feitoza, and Regina Maria da Cunha Bustamante.
