São Paulo – Syria’s central bank announced that banks and electronic payment companies in the country can now work with global networks such as Visa and Mastercard. The news was reported by the state news agency SANA, which said the measure aims to modernize the country’s financial infrastructure and promote digital inclusion.
The Central Bank governor, Abdulkader Husrieh, said the measure is a strategic step toward a more advanced digital economy and is expected to facilitate money transfers and payments for Syrians both inside and outside the country. According to him, the decision marks a new phase in payment systems, integrating Syria into the global financial system after years of reliance on limited traditional tools.
The measure, which covers both individuals and businesses, will allow foreign visitors to use international bank cards in Syria and enable broader use of cards issued in Syria abroad. Husrieh expects that cooperation with global payment companies will transfer expertise and modern technologies to the local market, increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of the financial sector.
