São Paulo – The Brazilian Textile Industry Association has filed a request for imports of cotton from non-Mercosur countries to Brazil to be exempted from the Common External Tariff for two months. The plea was made on Wednesday (27th), at the meeting of the Cotton Sector Chamber, an organization linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.
The goal is to ensure that the national textile industry is supplied up until the domestic crop enters the market. The cotton harvest begins in May. The Common External Tariff for non-Mercosur countries is currently 10%. The Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Abrapa) estimates that 1.2 million tonnes should be harvested this year.
