São Paulo – Unemployment rose and reached 7.5% in July, the highest level for a month of July since 2009, according to data released this Thursday (20th) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In June of this year, the rate stood at 6.9%, with July of last year marking 4.9%.
The number of people looking for a job reached 1.8 million workers in July, a number 56% higher than in the same period of last year. The average income per worker stood at R$ 2,170.70 (US$ 627.04), an increase of 0.3% over June of this year, however, a decline of 2.4% in comparison to July of last year.
Unemployment went up in six metro regions surveyed by IBGE in the year to year comparison: Salvador, Bahia; São Paulo, São Paulo, Recife, Pernambuco; Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais; and Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.
