São Paulo – The gross value of production of major crops in Brazil is at R$ 272.2 billion (USS 120.6 billion), according to figures disclosed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply .This value is 9.4% higher than last year. The regions that led the increase were the South and Southeast.
The products that contributed most to the advance were potatoes, tobacco, orange, maize, soybean, tomatoes and wheat. Also growing, but at a lower level, was production of rice, bananas, sugarcane and beans. Among the products that had a decrease in value of produce are cotton, coffee, cocoa, cassava, grapes and apples.
According to the Ministry, the results are due to the good performance of several of these items, with record production of maize, soybeans and sugarcane, for example, and more favourable prices for potatoes, oranges, maize and tomatoes.
