São Paulo – Lente Cultural and the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce have announced the Round of Meetings on Arab-Islamic History and Culture. The lectures will take place from July 3 to December 4, in a total of 11 meetings, all at the auditorium of Livraria Martins Fontes Paulista, at Avenida Paulista, 509, 2nd floor, in São Paulo.
All meetings will begin at 7 pm, all on weekdays, lasting 2:30 hours, with affordable prices to a general audience. “The idea is to promote the Arab-Islamic culture to the lay audience, who wouldn’t have access to this content, many times due to costs involved,” said the coordinator of the Lente Cultural project Heloisa Abreu Dib Julien.
The topics of the meetings are Napoleon in Egypt I and II, with speaker Plínio Freire Gomes (June 3 and 10); Arab Music, Expressiveness and Subtlety, with Marcia Dib (July 1); Jamil Al-Mansur Haddad, the Poet of the Borders; Between Eastern Literature and Brazilian Poetry, with Christina Stephano de Queiroz (August 22); and The Crusades: History and Myth I and II, with Plínio Freire Gomes (September 10 and 17).
Other lectures are Syrians and the Lebanese in São Paulo – The Routes of Immigration in the City, with Juliana Mouawad Khouri (October 10); World Heritage Site: Egypt, with Angela Rosch Rodrigues (October 24); The Ottoman Empire: Height and Crisis, with Heitor Loureiro (November 12); Armenia: Genocide, Diaspora and Present-Day Challenges, with Heitor Loureiro (November 26); and Palestine: The Endless Saga, with Arlene Clemesha (December 4).
The Chamber likes to support events that talk about the Arab culture and have been investing more and more in cultural events in the last few years,” said Silvia Antibas, the Arab Chamber’s Cultural Director. “It’s very important for the people to get to know the Arab culture and the historic protagonism of this people, and there’s no better way than through culture,” she added.
The lectures cost BRL 45 (USD 12.49) per event or BRL 445 (USD 123.49) for the full course, with 11 lectures. Lente Cultural is a cooperative project that promotes courses on Literature, History, Art History and Philosophy that aims to offer access to the general public, from all ages, with affordable and below-the-market prices.
