Brasil – The Brazilian government will donate US$ 120,000 to aid Syrian refugees who have fled to Lebanon. The decision was announced this Thursday (16th) by the Ministry of Foreign Relations. In a statement, the Brazilian foreign office informs that the funds will be transferred to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr).
The statement claims that “As part of Brazilian efforts to minimize the humanitarian effects of crisis in Syria, the Brazilian government will contribute US$ 120,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr) to support Syrian refugees in Lebanon.”
According to recent figures from international organizations, in addition to those who left their cities of origin in Syria, at least 157,600 people have fled Syria for Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, and Iraq. There is shortage of food, power, and medication.
For 17 months now, Syria has been plagued by internal conflict. Over 20,000 people are estimated to have died in the country as a result of confrontations.
