São Paulo – In a statement released this Monday (9), the Brazilian federal government reiterated its commitment to a two-state solution in the region of Palestine and Israel and its stance presented at the United Nations Security Council meeting on the subject this Sunday (8). Brazil occupies a temporary seat on the council and, as the rotating president of the entity, called for the meeting to be held in New York, United States. “The Brazilian government reaffirms its commitment to the two-state solution, with an economically viable Palestinian State, living in peace and security with Israel, within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders,” said the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release. According to the Foreign Ministry, at the meeting, Brazil deeply regretted the human losses and condemned the attacks against civilians.
“Brazil underscored that the parties must halt the use of violence against civilians and fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law. Brazil called for maximum restraint by all parties in order to prevent escalation with unpredictable consequences for international peace and security. It also emphasized the urgent need to resume peace process,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the meeting.
The Brazilian government has also been monitoring the situation of its citizens in the conflict region through its Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Representation office in Ramallah. The Ministry reported this Sunday afternoon that, until then, three Brazilians were missing and one was injured. It also said it would provide transportation for the repatriation of nationals through the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
