Rio de Janeiro – Brazil had GDP growth of 1.9% in 2002, bringing the GDP up to R$1.3 trillion. The numbers are the latest, revised, results from the government statistical bureau (IBGE), which had reported 2002 GDP growth at 1.5%. The IBGE says that the new numbers reflect more exports and less imports in 2002 than formerly reported.
The new calculations by the IBGE also show that in 2002 there was a Goods and Services surplus for the first time since 1994, the year the Real Plan went into effect and there was GDP growth of 5.8%.
According to the IBGE, 2002 GDP growth could have been even more if not for a drop of 4.2% in investments (both governmental and private sector) which caused a reduction of 1.3% in worker income.
