São Paulo – The Brazilian Navy will hold a photograph exhibition at Beirut’s Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center from June 14 to 29. The show will mark the Brazilian Navy Day, June 11, featuring pictures of its ships, helicopters, etc. that portray interactions with civilians in Brazil and Lebanon. June 11, 1865 was the date of one of the most important battles for the national Navy.
“There are 40 photos from official collection of the Navy’s Communications Department. They depict Navy officers performing drills, as well as interacting with society,” says the cultural center’s director Najua Bazzi.
According to her, the photos portray, in a very positive light, the Navy’s work in Brazil and as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), whose UN-established Maritime Task Force has been under Brazilian command since 2011.
According to Bazzi, the Brazilian Navy has a very good relationship with the Lebanese population. “They strive to be close to the community at all times, be it with members of the [Brazilian] Diaspora, be it with the Lebanese,” the director says regarding the Navy officers deployed to the Arab country.
Bazzi explains that the Brazilian Navy will often host official events at its ships, and that it uses the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center to reach out to people who do not attend those events.
“The acceptance is always great,” Bazzi says regarding the events. “People are curious, they want to get closer to those who are protecting the country’s coastline,” she points out.
The exhibition opens on the 14th with a cocktail party hosted by minister-counselor Henrique Ferraro, who is chargé d’affaires to the embassy of Brazil in Lebanon, and counter admiral Claudio Mello, the Brazilian Navy commander in Lebanon. The event will be open to the general public.
