After their sanitary problems, the United States and Europe will fight for their shares of the international beef and chicken market. Brazil, having won over new clients in the segment these past few years, will have to work hard to keep the markets it has opened.

The information was released today by the Pork Exporters Association. Last month, shipments yielded US$ 68.9 million. Accumulated so far this year, revenues have added up to US$ 242.9 million.
Overseas sales reached US$ 221.4 million, which corresponds to the shipment of 206.4 tons. Middle Eastern and African countries bought 10.5% and 44% more, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
Overseas sales of the commodity went from 929,000 tons in the first five months of 2003 to 2.7 million this year. Volume is three times larger. This result was stimulated by the low product quote. From January to May of this year, Brazil has already sold 77% of the total amount traded on the international market in the whole of 2003.
The Brazilian government has decided to pay a larger price for organic produce from family farming. This is so as to encourage ecological agriculture in Brazil. The country already has the second largest number of farmers practicing ecological farming, losing only to Italy.

Dairy product shipping generated revenues of US$ 7.3 million in May, 188,7% over the result in the same month in 2003. Of this total, the Arab country answered to US$ 3.1 million. The sector, however, still shows a deficit. Import totalled US$ 8.3 million in the period.
Cattle beef producers brought in US$ 199 million on the foreign market. So far this year, international sales have yielded US$ 866 million. Egypt led the import ranking in the first five months of the year, but in May, Russia headed the list as main buyer.
