São Paulo – The Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center has launched an exhibition intended to recount Brazil’s history from its discovery until the proclamation of the Republic. The show opened this Wednesday (22nd), the date the country was discovered on, in 1500, and will continue until May 22nd, according to Najua Bazzi, the director fo the Center, which is part of the Cultural Department of the Brazilian embassy in Beirut.
The exhibition is meant to celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of Brazil and spread knowledge about the country’s history. The pictures show the discovery, colonization, the formation of hereditary captaincies, gold and diamond mining, independence, the fall of the Empire and the proclamation of the Republic. “We also portray the beginning of the immigration wave, especially Lebanese immigrants and their contribution,” Bazzi says.
The show features 21 historical pictures in posters of various sizes, in chronological order. The panels are subtitled to explain to visitors the time periods and events they refer to. The Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center director says the goal is to attract Brazilians from the diaspora and the Lebanese community. Students from primary and secondary schools will also be invited, as well as students from the Cultural Center itself.
The show is called “Brazil – Chronology from the Discovery to the Republic” and admission is free. It is one of the Center’s several initiatives. In addition to exhibitions and events marking historic or folkloric dates, the facility offers Portuguese language courses, concerts, documentary film screenings and access to its library and media collection.
