São Paulo – This Thursday (23rd), the United Nations (UN) have sent out a call for aid and donations to the victims of conflicts underway in Iraq. According to information released by the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha), 5.2 million people have been affected by attacks and need mostly food and winter clothes.
The forecast that the people affected by conflict will require at least US$ 2.2 billion by December 2015 is part of the third revision of the Strategic Response Plan drafted by the UN and by non-government organizations (NGOs) active in the country. The UN’s aid request provides for spending on foodstuffs, personal care items, healthcare, education and logistics. At least 1.26 million people are in need of winter clothing and items.
According to data released by Ocha, out of the total amount required, US$ 600 million have already been donated, mostly by Saudi Arabia. Another US$ 1.6 billion are needed before the end of 2015. The UN has warned, however, that it needs the contributions as soon as possible, to address the needs of dislodged persons during winter.
Compensations
Also this Thursday, the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) announced that it has made US$ 1 billion available to Kuwait, for losses incurred during the invasion of Iraqi troops in 1990.
According to the UNCC, the claims are divided into six categories and include individuals, corporations, governments and international organizations. The billion-dollar payment settles a claim submitted by Kuwait on behalf of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. Total compensation payments to Kuwait amount to US$ 47 billion. Payments worth US$ 4.6 billion are still pending.
