São Paulo – Brazilian exports of leather in January totalled US$ 141.1 million, which represented growth of 35% over the same month last year. The figures are disclosed by the Confederation of Brazilian Hides and Skins Industries (CICB).
"Revenues calculated in January were the best obtained in the month over the last two years, despite below expectations, which were for an average monthly volume of US$ 160 million in 2011," said the organisation’s president, Wolfgang Goerlich, in a press statement.
According to a press statement, apart from appreciation of the real against the dollar, which is affecting sector exports, in the last quarter of 2010 there was a reduction in the slaughtering which also affected the performance of tanneries. Despite the problems, Goerlich said that the Brazilian leather industry has been working hard to improve its competiveness and reach better results in 2011.
