São Paulo – The 23rd World Ophthalmology Congress will include Brazilian doctors and a national company. The event should take place from the 16th to the 20th of February, in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, and will count on talks and presentations by ophthalmologists from several parts of the world, as well as an exhibition of products by dozens of international companies.
Among the Brazilian doctors participating is Renato Damasceno, from Alagoas, holder of an ophthalmology doctorate by the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and a specialist in Ocular Oncology and Ocular Plastic Surgery by the Santa Casa de São Paulo and Erlangen-Nuremberg University, in Germany.
The theme of the presentation by Damasceno will be eyelid tumours. The paper is the result of research developed with the Unifesp, by Erlangen-Nuremberg and by the Alagoas State Centre for Eyesight Rehabilitation (Cervi). "It is a retrospective study. We analyse all tumour cases operated at the German university from 1980 to date and identify the main kinds and techniques that generated the best results in the period,” explained Damasceno, who works for the Alagoas Ophthalmology Centre and in the research extension area of Cervi.
According to the doctor, the study identified two techniques that presented the best results in tumour treatment. The research will be shown on a poster for all participants of the event, as well as being presented in a class, as part of the scientific programme of the course. Of the six doctors who worked on the study, Damasceno is the only Brazilian.
At age 31, Damasceno has already participated in several congresses in Europe, but this is the first time he goes to an event in an Arab country. He said that the congress may open doors for partnerships in the region. "A congress like this one presents many options for networking, for partnerships and exchange. We are interested, knowing that the Arabs have solid institutions, that they may contribute to our development, and that we may contribute with theirs,” he pointed out.
Apart from Damasceno, also exhibited or presented will be works by other Brazilian doctors, including "A Randomized Clinical Trial to Compare the Efficacy and Safety of Isolated or Combined Intravitreal Injection of Triamcinolone Acetonide and Bevacizumab for Diabetic Macular Edema – Atemd Protocol – A Brazilian Clinical Trial”, by Hermelino Oliveira Neto; "Acanthamoeba Keratitis: An Infectious Disease that Persists in Brazil”, by Denise De Freitas; and "Glutathione S-Transferase T1 Polymorphism Analysis in Patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma in Brazilian Population”, by Francisco Rodrigues.
The event will also include seminar “Portuguese in Global Ophthalmology”, presented by the Portuguese Ophthalmology Society.
Mediphacos
Mediphacos, which makes intraocular lenses, is the only Brazilian company exhibiting at the event in Abu Dhabi. "Mediphacos participates in all of the main global ophthalmology congresses. We focus on services and relations with our clients,” stated Cynthia Karez, of the Marketing department.
The company exports to 53 countries, among them 17 Arab ones, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the Emirates, Tunisia, Yemen, Algeria and Morocco, among others.
During the event, Mediphacos should exhibit three different kinds of intraocular lenses and also its premium product, Keraring, an advanced system for cornea remodelling.
