Brasília – This Friday (4th), during the G20 Summit in Cannes, France, the Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff stated that the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, will be an opportunity to “discuss the development model nations want for their future.” The Rio+20 is scheduled for June 2012, in Rio de Janeiro.
Dilma also said the Rio+20 will not be simply a meeting on the environment, because it will discuss other important topics such as green economy, eradication of poverty and international governance for sustainable development.
The president spoke during a panel on climate at the G20 meeting and reaffirmed the Brazilian position that emerging countries must contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a different way than developed countries, so that they will not bear too high a economic burden.
Earlier, Dilma met with the German prime minister, Angela Merkel, and after a working session and a G20 luncheon she will meet with the Turkish prime minister, Recep Erdogan.
The annual G20 meeting will end on this Friday. Debates have been focusing mainly on the search for solutions to the international economic crisis, the debt of European countries, and the rescue to Greece.
