Brasília – This Thursday (27), the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to end the authorization for use of military force in Libya. The decision was made in spite of requests by the Libyan transitional government for the mission to be extended for another month.
Last Tuesday (25), the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) made a request for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) to remain in Libya at least “by the end of the year.” The Libyan authorities argued that after the death of dictator Muammar Kadafi, on the 20th this month, citizens loyal to him threaten the order in the country. Nato has been active in Libya since March.
The Brazilian government abstained from backing military intervention in Libya. To the Brazilian authorities, it is best to seek peaceful solutions through conversation and negotiation.
