São Paulo – The Algerian minister of Foreign Affairs, Mourad Medelci, will be in Brazil on Monday (19th). The visit was prompted by invitation of the Brazilian foreign minister, Celso Amorim, and the two should address the countries’ bilateral, regional and multilateral agendas.
Amorim and Medelci will also attend the 4th Meeting of the Brazil-Algeria Joint Commission, during which matters pertaining to relations between the two nations will be discussed, in fields such as agriculture, trade and industry, environment, water resources, and energy.
Algeria is a leading partner of Brazil amidst the Arab countries. From January until June, Algeria obtained US$ 1.3 billion in revenues from sales to the Brazilian market, mostly naphtha for the petrochemical industry and crude oil. During the same period in 2009, the figure was US$ 355 million.
Brazil also exports to the Algerian market, although in smaller amounts. Exports totalled US$ 329 million in the first half, and the main products shipped were sugar and meats. In the same period of 2009, sales totalled US$ 321.5 million.
